Ceramic Coating High Spots: Causes, Prevention and Correction

A ceramic coating high spot is an area where excess coating has not been levelled evenly before it begins to cure. It may appear as a darker patch, rainbow-like smear, oily mark or uneven reflection—especially on dark paint and under directional lighting.

High spots are easiest to address while the coating is still workable. Once cured, correction can become an abrasive process that may remove coating as well as the visible defect. Always follow the current product instructions and stop if the surface does not respond as expected.

What does a ceramic coating high spot look like?

Typical signs include rainbow patches, dark or oily-looking areas, streaks, smears and reflections that look different from the surrounding finish. Inspect from several angles because a mark that is invisible under overhead lighting may appear under a handheld light.

Not every mark is a high spot. Polishing residue, panel-wipe streaks, fingerprints, water deposits and defects beneath the coating can look similar. Clean preparation and methodical inspection make the cause easier to identify.

  • Too much coating is applied to the working area.
  • The section is too large to level consistently.
  • Excess coating is left beyond its workable stage.
  • The first levelling towel becomes saturated or begins dragging.
  • A second clean towel is not used to finish the section.
  • Poor lighting hides residue until later.
  • Temperature, humidity, airflow or panel heat changes flash behaviour.
  • Edges, body lines, badges and adjacent sections are missed during inspection.

How to prevent high spots with Pure Gloss Pro 9H

Work on clean, dry and properly prepared paint in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Use bright inspection lighting and keep several clean, dry microfibre towels ready before opening the bottle.

  1. Apply a thin, even layer. Work on one small section at a time using overlapping horizontal and vertical passes.
  2. Watch the surface. Pure Gloss Pro 9H can be allowed to set for up to approximately two minutes before buffing, but temperature, humidity and airflow affect flash time. Observe the slight hazing, rainbowing or visible change described in the current instructions rather than relying only on a timer.
  3. Level with a clean towel. Remove excess coating gently and methodically.
  4. Follow with a second towel. Buff to a clear, streak-free finish before moving on.
  5. Inspect immediately. Check the section from several angles under bright lighting, including its edges and overlaps.
  6. Replace towels regularly. Stop using any towel that becomes saturated or begins dragging.

What to do if you find a high spot during application

Stop applying coating to new sections. If the affected area is still within the workable stage, follow the current Pure Gloss Pro 9H instructions and level it immediately with clean, dry microfibre towels. Inspect again from multiple angles before continuing.

Do not add solvents, household products or unapproved chemicals. Do not keep rubbing a section that has begun to resist levelling. If the mark remains or the coating behaves unexpectedly, stop and contact Pure Gloss before proceeding.

What if the high spot has cured?

A cured high spot may require controlled polishing, which can reduce or remove the coating from the affected area. The panel may then need suitable preparation and reapplication. The correct approach depends on the paint, the extent of the defect and how far the coating has cured.

Machine polishing carries clear-coat and finish risks. If you cannot assess paint condition or polish safely, ask a competent detailer to inspect the vehicle. Avoid following a generic correction recipe designed for another product or surface.

High spots versus defects beneath the coating

If a mark was present before application, the coating will not remove it. Swirls, scratches, oxidation, water marks and preparation residue can remain visible beneath the finished layer. This is why washing, decontamination, paint correction where required and a streak-free panel wipe must be completed before coating.
